Phonics

Curriculum (Intent)

  • Through quality text, linked to topics where possible, all learners access a curriculum that enables them to embed the skills and knowledge in reading, writing and spoken language they need to succeed in life.

  • The English curriculum has been developed to recognise the importance of English in every aspect of daily life and to develop pupils’ love of reading, writing and discussion.

  • Pupils in the early years gain the foundational knowledge they need for future success through a curriculum that is adapted to meet the needs and experiences of Our Lady’s pupils

Pedagogy (Implementation)

Teaching of Phonics

  • Phonics is taught daily through Read Write inc, to EYFS & KS1 (and used as an intervention in KS2) to build decoding skills to support early reading. In reverse, encoding is used to reinforce spelling skills

Teaching of Reading

  • Through daily guided reading based on quality text, pupils learn to read easily, fluently, and with good understanding.

  • Inference and deduction are taught during guided reading and built upon during class texts which are read daily to the class.

Assessment (Impact)

We aspire for all children to reach age related expectations or above by the end of each year group.

Phonics:

  • Taught daily through Read, Write, inc. Pupils are assessed every 6 weeks and grouped accordingly. Reading books match phonic levels.

  • Pupils are assessed at the end of year 1 through national phonic screening

Phonics at Our Lady's

At Our Lady's, we follow Read, Write Inc.

Read Write Inc. is a popular phonics scheme. Like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). The children will quickly feel confident and successful.
